Labor of love

A couple of weekends ago I attended the Vintage Clothing and Textile show in Burbank. While meandering around I spied some crazy quilt fabric peeking out of a sales rack. I pulled out the dress and seeing that it had "good bones" decided to buy it. I knew it would be way too big for me, but I thought maybe I could reuse the fabric in some other way.  I've always loved crazy quilts...I relate to their sporadic, quirky nature.

Once I got home, I checked inside for labels and discovered it had been made in Milan, Italy by Myricae for Saks Fifth Avenue.  It was a size 16- too large and long but I was determined to save the dress and keep it for me!  Those of you who know me know that tailoring is not my forte, but I created some additional darts in my non-technical, funky way and it worked out just fine.

It's a happy dress, don't you think? The fabrics are so fun to look at and the 100% cotton is a substantial weight with a nice muslin lining.  I don't know how old the dress is, but I'm guessing the 60s.

A friend recently gifted me her mother's crazy quilt top from the 30s.  It's wonderfully colorful and done in cold rayon.  I'm looking forward to working with it once I decide what to do.  Something crazy, I'm thinking.  :)
