Still a fan

I started reading Nancy Drew books when I was about ten years old and over the course of a couple years, read all of the original 30 mysteries published by Grosset and Dunlap.   In the fifth and sixth grade I acquired a Nancy Drew alter-ego and spent hours creating and playing out mysteries after school with my best friend, Tricka Carpenter.  We buried clues in the backyard garden and hid cryptic notes requiring knowledge of our secret code to decipher.  One afternoon when we were walking home from school,  we discovered a friend's abandoned bicycle in the middle of the street. Assuming he had been kidnapped, we hurried home to tell my mom that we should call the police.

"The Password to Larkspur Lane" was the first Nancy Drew books that I read.  I found it on the bookshelf among my dad's engineering texts and mom's cookbooks. It was given to my mom on her 13th birthday by her friend, Armi, and twenty years later, at the age of ten, I wrote my name on a blank page in the back.

As a result of many moves and improper storage conditions the book sustained damage. About 30 years after I signed the back of the book, my sister-in-law, Deborah, an accomplished book binder, repaired it for me as a birthday gift.  My only salvaged childhood possession continues to bring me joy.

Here's a link to the history of the Nancy Drew books.
